Hello from Ambassador Island's Tiki Bar!

I just finished up my tour of the Island’s Tiki Bar. What an amazing time. I did so much talking, my voice is hoarse! Branding is such a great topic to learn about. Did you know where the term Branding derived from? According to some Google searches, It’s origin is from a very long time ago from the ancient North Germanic language meaning “a piece of burning wood” and
later came to be known to “mark permanently with a hot iron”. Even from ancient times, branding was about ownership of something valuable that belongs to you, something with great importance. So, when your thinking about branding your company and creating your brand strategy, think about what value your company holds, how important it is to you, and then turn that into a visual representation.

As I was talking to various people at the Tiki Bar, it seemed that there was some confusion and misunderstandings about a bunch of marketing buzz words. So, here are some marketing terms that are very important to know as you are putting together your brand and corporate identity for your small business.


Brand Identity

Brand Identity is all about the emotional connection and relationship you have with your customers and clients. Your Brand Identity is really about telling your company's story. It's about what your company's promise is to your clients and consists of elements such as benefits, performance, quality, support, and your company values. Some questions to ask yourself as your developing your brand identity would be, what makes your company unique and stand out from others? What is your main purpose? What are you promising your customers? What personality does your company have or inspire to have? Where do you want to position your company in your target audience's mind?


Corporate Identity

Corporate Identity is all about the look and feel of the business. Creating a professional, visual presence for your business. This includes elements of your brand such as your logo, website, business cards, and other marketing collateral. Developing and showcasing a consistent corporate identity is critically important.


Brand Awareness

Brand Awareness is all about when a brand, your brand, is instantly recognized by your target audience and is associated with one or more elements of your brand. Some examples would be recognizing and relating to your company product's smell, or maybe your company's colors. A good example is when someone says "take this to the Xerox machine", you know they are referring to the copy machine.


Brand Image

Brand Image is the feeling or impression your customers and clients get when they think or get exposed to your company's product or service. As a business owner or marketing professional, you are the brand owner and part of your responsibility is making sure you communicate your brand identity and then compare it to your company's brand image. Review the results and then make any necessary changes. Basically, brand identity is what you want your clients to think and feel about you and brand image is what your clients currently think and feel about you.
